Edna Smith and Shelley Ross, fellow dirt-lovers from Margareee Valley, Cape Breton are building a hanging flower basket. I spoke at a women’s retreat organized by their church and because it’s the season for planting, I offered to give a workshop on how to make a hanging flower basket. Gerry (the greenhouse guru) was with me on this trip and we bought enough supplies to make two baskets. After constructing and explaining the first one, Gerry suggested volunteers build the second one. Nothing like hands-on experience! At the end of the retreat, the baskets (plus tons of extra flowers) were given away as draw prizes. We were all sad when the weekend ended — except for two smiling women who took home gorgeous baskets! My topic at the retreat had been spiritual dryness, what I call the wilderness. Isaiah says: The wilderness and the dry land will be glad; the desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose. It will blossom abundantly and will also rejoice with joy and singing. (Isa 35:1,2a)
